Group Petitions Gov. Ododo Over Idah LGA Secretary Appointment, Demands Indigenous Replacement
A group, Concerned Citizens of Idah, has called on Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo, to review the appointment of the Secretary of Idah Local Government Area.
In a press statement signed by Chief Akwu Goodman and made available to newsmen on Monday in Idah, the group alleged marginalization in the appointment of key officials in the local government.
The group claimed that the current Secretary of Idah LGA, Grace Parker, is not an indigene of the area, alleging that she hails from Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to the statement, the position of Local Government Secretary should be occupied by an indigene of Idah, which the group described as the ancestral headquarters of the Igala Kingdom.
"Idah is home to numerous highly educated and capable women of integrity. To repeatedly appoint a non-indigenous person to the position of Local Government Secretary is unacceptable to the people of Idah," the statement quoted Goodman as saying.
The group urged the state government to ensure that appointments reflect local content and to involve community stakeholders in decision-making processes.
When contacted for context, the group cited instances in other states where non-indigenous appointments were reversed after public protest.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Idah Local Government Council and the appointee mentioned were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report. All sides will be given a fair hearing when they respond.
