Former Lawmaker Calls for Calm in Akpabio-Akpoti-Uduaghan Row
A former member representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Yusuf (aka Teejay Yusuf), has expressed disappointment at the way the lingering feud between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is being managed.
In a statement, Teejay Yusuf stated that the Senate, without careful application of wisdom and experience, had operated in error by allowing the crisis to snowball into a national and international debate. The former lawmaker noted that the row would have been nipped in the bud if the leadership of the Senate had exhibited genuineness, sincerity, and comradeship in handling the crisis.
The statement faulted the application of strength and dominance when proper reasoning would have saved the situation, emphasizing that the initial matter of seating arrangement should not have been allowed to escalate into bigger issues. Teejay Yusuf also flawed several avoidable moves, including the suspension saga, recall process, and alleged manipulation of the committee attendance list, which he described as a "dance to the rhythm of some drummers."
The statement reiterated that parliament all over the world is a place of contest, noting that Natasha's clamour on seating arrangement was not out of place, citing previous agitations between Akpabio and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Saraki and David Mark, Femi Gbajabiamila and Chinda Kinsley, Rima Shawulu, and Teejay Yusuf and Gbajabiamila as examples, which were resolved amicably.
Teejay Yusuf congratulated Akpoti-Uduaghan for being dogged in the midst of intimidation and urged her to continue her commitment towards impacting positively on the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District. The statement expressed hope for an amicable solution to rebrand the battered image of the Senate, urging well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the matter.
