Kogi State Government Approves Funds for WAEC Fees for it's students in Public Schools.
Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved funds for the payment of 2024/2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees for 18,734 Senior Secondary Three (SS3) students in public schools across the state.¹ This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, during a press briefing in his office in Lokoja.
The commissioner emphasized that the gesture is in line with the law for free examination registration fees for Kogi State students in public primary and secondary schools signed by former Governor Yahaya Bello.² He noted that the state government has committed to paying for all internal and external examinations, including the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE-JAMB) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NAPTEB) fees for senior secondary school students.
According to the commissioner, the payment of WAEC fees is a significant investment in education, aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and encouraging higher school enrollment in the state.³ He commended Governor Ododo for continuing the legacy of his predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and assured parents that the state government would continue to prioritize education.
The commissioner also disclosed that the state government had allocated 30% of its budget to education, making it possible to massively fund education, including the payment of fees for students. He noted that the increase in student enrollment was an indication that more students were abandoning private schools for public ones.
ASUS President Comrade Emeje Ogwu Sunday stated that 1,108 teachers have been employed and posted, leaving a balance of 2,871. He noted that despite the initial approval, funding issues persist, and the teacher shortage remains a concern. Comrade Emeje emphasized the urgent need to employ the remaining 1,871 teachers, expressing gratitude to the Governor and pledging support for the SLSC's success.
