LEADERSHIP CORNER No. 8: The Resilience, Discipline, and Risk-Taking/Bearing of a Courageous and Successful LeaderUnveiling the Pillars of Exceptional Leadership: Resilience, Discipline, and Risk-Taking

Leadership is a great task that is quite demandin,g on the part of the person involved therein. As such, it requires resilience, discipline, risk-taking/bearing, if the leader is to be successful and result-oriented. Resilience in this context means the ability to cope, adjust, and endure unpalatable, adverse, hard, difficult, and complex situations. Successful leaders are focused, resilient, disciplined, and courageous in the face and midst of difficult, stressful, and turbulent conditions. Such leaders have problem-solving skills and remain undaunted.

In a different development, the discipline of a leader helps him/her to succeed in the midst of negative influences coming from bad individuals who cannot change him or her. Consequently, good governance leading to all-round development is guaranteed. The leader receives praises, commendations, and encomiums from the subjects.

In contemporary times, most leaders bow to the pressures from girls and live daily in lusts, unwarranted pleasures that do not allow proper thinking, all forms of incests, and immoral behaviors that prevent God's presence in their lives. Therefore, representing God properly, as they are supposed to, becomes evasive. Leaders who are carried away on sighting money or because of the availability of money are not disciplined. It means that such leaders bow easily to glory or wealth, as enunciated earlier. If discipline is not exercised by leaders during the availability of government funds, it usually leads to embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, diversion of public money for personal use, amassing unnecessary wealth, which may invariably lead to pressures of probe later in life, arrests, imprisonment, bribery, corruption, and all forms of embarrassment. These are avoidable challenges by leaders if they are disciplined.

Good, courageous, and successful leaders are not unnecessarily influenced by the worship of men, especially those trumpeting unnecessary sycophancy about things that do not merit such praises, what I address in this article as worship. It is stated in the Holy writ that "if thou faint in adversity, it means thy strength is small." Even our creator wants leaders to have stamina, strength, grace, and ability that can withstand stressful, difficult, unpalatable, risky situations and emerge victorious, leading the people to the desired promised land.

Risk-taking and risk-bearing is an indispensable ability in leadership, in that, as captain navigating and piloting the 'ship' of administration, the leader is the first to receive all blames, arrows, and bullets, yet he/she faces the challenges headlong without turning back. He/she bears all the negative situations alone in order to bring victory, succor, successes, and dividends of good governance to the people. Reason, it is commonly stated, that 'uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.'

In conclusion, leaders ought to subject themselves to personal development, prayers, good counsels from good-spirited and experienced individuals, in order to possess these inert characteristics, abilities, and learned traits to enable successful leadership.
