_Tolerance: The Foundation of Global Peace and Prosperity_Dr.Nuhu Solomon Anyegwu.



Ambassador Dr. Nuhu Solomon Anyegwu has emphasized the crucial role of tolerance in achieving global peace and harmony .
Dr.Nuhu Solomon Anyegwu made the assertion in a paper presentation titiled "The Importance of Tolerance In The Development and Maintenance of Peace Worldwide"to  mark the International Day of Tolerance Organized by The Progressive Patriots (TPP) in collaboration with Mopegan in Lokoja.
 The event highlighted the importance of tolerance in promoting understanding, reducing conflicts, and building trust.

_In an Opening remark,
Comrade Counsel, Director General of The Progressive Patriots,  noted that the event is in commemoration of the International Day of Tolerance being celebrated worldwide and announced names of deserving selected  individuals to be confered with awards for their remarkable achievements in their respective fields. Comrade Counsel said that the United Nations initiated the International Day of Tolerance in 1994 to emphasize the need for global tolerance [1).

Some of the personalities honored at the event include, 

- _Engineer Dr. Lawal Omeiza_
- _Idowu Samuel Olugbemi_
- _Barister Sikiru Isa Oba_
- _Sanitarian Umar Anatako_, Acting Provost of the Kogi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Idah
- _Warrant Officer David Salawu_, retired State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion of ex-service men
- _Elder Oloruntobi Abraham Leke_
- _Dr. Abubakar O. Sadiq_
- _Engineer Emmanuel Ozovehe_
- _Pastor Omeiza Usman_
- _Princess Hajia Nana Hauwa Yusuf_, DG Radio Kogi

In a remark the chairman of the occasion Comrade Austin Omeiza commended the organizers for advocating peace in the society. He described the event as unique in fostering peace and tolerance and urged guests to listen attentively to Dr. Anyegwu's lecture on the ingredients of fostering peace for a better society.

Dr Anyegwu defined tolerance as the willingness to accept, endure, or accommodate differences, opinions, beliefs, and behaviors that may not align with one's own values, beliefs, or practices. He identified five essential types of tolerance: social, religious, political, emotional, and cultural tolerance. These types of tolerance are vital in fostering a culture of peace and harmony.

He also stressed that tolerance has characteristics such as open-mindedness, empathy, understanding, patience, non-judgmental attitudes, respect for differences, and willingness to listen. He noted that global peace eludes us due to intertribal clashes, religious crises, banditry, and kidnappings, but tolerance can help address these challenges.

_Key Roles of Tolerance in Promoting Global Peace he noted includes,
- _Ensuring social, community, and national peace_
- _Promoting understanding through empathy and open-mindedness_
- _Reducing conflicts_
- _Building trust_
- _Encouraging diversity_
- _Supporting human rights_
- _Upholding equality and justice_

In addition to tolerance, Dr. Anyegwu identified other essential factors for global peace, including love, negotiation, social consideration, godliness with contentment, development, and good governance.

As Dr. Anyegwu urged, let us imbibe tolerance in our daily lives for global peace. By embracing tolerance, we can create a more harmonious and peaceful world.

Comrade Ali Atabor, a former Chairman of the Kogi state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, emphasized the importance of fostering peace and understanding among society's various segments during his speech at the event. He praised former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello and incumbent Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for their efforts in maintaining peace in Kogi State.

The International Day of Tolerance serves as a reminder that peace building requires collective effort and commitment. 

Furthermore, fostering peace and tolerance requires addressing the root causes of conflicts, such as religious and ethnic differences. By promoting dialogue and understanding, we can overcome these challenges and create a more inclusive and peaceful
