_Navy's Alleged Complicity in Oil Theft: Arewa People's Assembly Demands Action_
The Arewa People's Assembly (APA) has called for the immediate removal of Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, over allegations of the Nigerian Navy's involvement in crude oil theft and economic sabotage.
In a media release issued on Friday, the APA coordinator, Alhaji Auta Balarabe, and Director of Orientation and Mobilisation, Malam Bashir Gowon, stated that the Nigerian Navy's top echelon has compromised the fight against crude oil theft, colluding with oil criminals in the Niger Delta.
The APA emphasized that Nigeria's economy, which relies heavily on oil and gas, with 55% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 95% of its export earnings, cannot afford to have its naval forces undermining efforts to combat oil theft.
The group cited recent statements by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, which revealed the Nigerian Navy's alleged complicity in oil theft and maritime terrorism.
The APA urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action, seeking the removal of Admiral Ogalla and a comprehensive overhaul of the Nigerian Navy's architecture to restore its core functions and professionalism.
The group emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to optimize oil and gas security, including enhanced inter-agency collaboration, increased transparency, and direct communication between the Navy and private surveillance efforts.
The APA's call for action comes as Nigeria struggles to combat economic woes, with the group stressing that reforms and accountability must take precedence over sentiments and national interest.
The APA's letter to President Tinubu reads in part: "We are constrained to write to you as a counter to the ideas enunciated in the geo-political North-South one-way globalization rationality which holds that problems that affect the south hemisphere do not become mankind's global problem until they also affect the north and pose a danger to societal order."
The group maintained that it will not fold its arms and allow issues affecting the South to metamorphose into the North before raising an alarm, which is capable of creating social disorder.
The APA urged the Nigerian Navy to discontinue its compromising tendencies and fight the stealing of the country's common patrimony, which is crude oil.
The group also called on President Tinubu to direct an immediate overhaul of the Nigerian Navy's architecture, as it seems to have deviated from its core functions and professionalism.
The APA emphasized that as Nigeria navigates these challenging times, it is essential to prioritize reforms and accountability over sentiments and harboring those whose mission statements are at cross-purposes with the national interest.
