NUJ NATIONAL SECURITY SUMMIT ENDS IN ABUJA, STAKEHOLDERS PLEDGE MEDIA-SECURITY PARTNERSHIP

The 2-day National Security Summit organized by the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, ended on Friday, 19 June 2026, with stakeholders urging stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies to curb insecurity nationwide.

Alhaji Ali Atabor, a critical stakeholder of the union, attended the summit in Abuja.

He said the gathering provided a timely platform to address security concerns affecting Nigerians.

The summit attracted NUJ members from across the country, including former Presidents and former National Secretaries.

Also present were key media stakeholders and representatives of heads of security agencies.

Declaring the summit open on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, stressed the need for collective action on security.

“The security challenge facing our nation has become a global challenge. Overcoming it requires collective responsibility from all stakeholders,” the Minister said.

Alhaji Idris, who chaired the occasion, further highlighted the role of journalists in national development. “The media, as the watchdog of society, must sustain a strong working relationship with security agencies if we are to attain a peaceful, prosperous, and greater Nigeria,” he stated.

Alhaji Ali Atabor commended the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for providing the platform to discuss issues that reflect the feelings of Nigerians.

He described the summit as apt given the rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.

“The media has the responsibility to partner security agencies to nip this ugly trend in the bud,” Alhaji Atabor said.

He added that journalists must balance reportage with national interest while supporting efforts to restore peace.

Comrade Yahya had earlier in his welcome address, noted that the security summit was one of his campaign promises to NUJ members. “NUJ under my leadership is keeping faith with our commitments. We promised to engage stakeholders on critical national issues, and this summit is proof of that commitment,” he said.

The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” concluded with a resolution for sustained dialogue, responsible reporting, and closer synergy between the press and security agencies in the interest of national security.
