*Kogi State Govt Issues Mini-Grid Permits, Paves Way for Expanded Energy Access*
The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has issued permits to mini-grid investors, including Havewill Energy Limited, Prado Power Limited, Cross Boundary Limited, and Magnificent Gateway Limited, to support the development of mini-grid systems and enhance electricity access in areas with limited or no power supply.
In a message to the ceremony, the Kogi State Commissioner for Energy and Rural Development, Engineer Mohamed Abdulmutalib, congratulated mini-grid developers on meeting required standards and demonstrating commitment to professionalism and excellence in the renewable energy sector. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of access to reliable and clean energy for economic growth and improved livelihoods, particularly in underserved communities. He was represented by his Technical Assistant, Alh. Isa Husseini Sule, a former permanent secretary of the Ministry.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of KERC, Engineer Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris, stated that mini-grids are crucial for last-mile electrification, rural economic inclusion, and productive-use energy deployment. The permits being issued to mini-grid developers are regulatory contracts that confer rights and impose obligations on safety, technical standards, and service quality.
He said the State welcomes regulated investment, compliant innovation, and orderly speed governed by clear rules.
The Mini -grid regulation he noted is part of the commission 'efforts to decentralize electricity supply and attract investment into the state power sector.
According to him,the regulations offer a streamlined licensing process for operators generating up to one megawatt of power for local use.
Vice Chairman Engineer Michael Enema Meliga congratulated permit holders, noting that not all applicants qualify, and emphasized KERC's commitment to supporting them. Meliga highlighted KERC's proximity to rural areas, unlike previous regulatory bodies, allowing for closer collaboration and monitoring.
Engineer Dr. Abdulsalam Yusuf PhD, Commissioner MCR, emphasized that the state seeks regulated investment, compliant innovation, and orderly speed governed by clear rules. He stated that KERC will ensure compliance with safety, technical, and service standards, monitoring performance continuously to prevent failure.
Prof. Ibrahim Abdulkarim, Commissioner for Legal, Licensing, urged permit holders to comply with the state's electricity regulations, including customer protection, mini-grid, and tariff methodology regulations. He mentioned that KERC has put in place special institutions, including a special task force and a special court, to protect investments and ensure compliance.
The Secretary of the Commission, Alhaji Kashim Mambo, expressed gratitude to the state government and stakeholders for establishing the commission. He thanked Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for swiftly forming the commission, and the State Assembly for quickly passing the relevant law. Mambo also appreciated the Commissioner for Rural Energy and Electricity, Engineer Mohamed Abdulmutalib, for his guidance and support.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of permits to the investors by the Chairman and chief Executive officer of the commission, Engineer Ibrahim s.Abdulwaaris.
The permit holders are expected to comply with KERC's regulations and standards to ensure successful operations.
