*_Measurement of Values of Things and Person(s)_**_By Amb (Dr) Nuhu Solomon Anyegwu_*

Values are highly cherished virtues and qualities in our human society, which from time immemorial have been objectively and subjectively held onto because of their importance. Values are critical to our day-to-day living and in our relationships with one another. Measurement of values literally means assessing, evaluating, and appraising the quality of a thing or person. This happens to be a branch of philosophy called axiology.

The following are examples of values in our human society: natural beauty and handsomeness, goodness, faithfulness, good wealth, high intelligence and sound knowledge, piety, good character and behaviors, honesty, maintenance of virginity till marriage, godliness, respect for seniors and elders, good name, truthfulness, good leadership and followership, amongst others.

In contemporary times, these values are being gradually eroded due to the influence of social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, etc.), negligence of moral training in schools and tertiary institutions, lack of parental training, negative impact of peer group pressure, and failure of government in carrying out value reorientation programs. This has resulted in manipulations of our polity, yahoo-yahooism, trading in human body parts, thereby destroying the sanctity of man.

Consequently, the absence of these values has grave effects on human society, such as hardship, suffering, troubles, bad governance or maladministration, drug abuse and addiction, armed robbery, wars, human trafficking, alcoholism, insanity (psychosis and neurosis), rape, examination malpractices, fighting, smoking, hooliganism, seditions, incest, and all forms of immorality.

In view of the foregoing, it is imperative and expedient that the various agents of socialization, viz: families, schools, churches, mosques, Government Orientation Agencies, orphanages, and Civil society groups and organizations rise up to live up to their expectations to avert these negative trends resulting from the decay and decline of values in human society.

Suffice it to state that the revival and restoration of these values in our human society is a possibility. Optimistically, as we believe in the restoration of these values, we all need to rise up to this challenge and do the needful now before these negative trends consume and destroy human society.

In conclusion, it is commonly stated that "a stitch in time saves nine" and "make hay while the sun shines." Stakeholders should do something now or never. If we do, society will be better, safer, peaceful, and prosperous once again.
